Niagara police have just wrapped up a campaign focused on pedestrian crossover safety, and are reminding the public to be mindful of road safety rules.
Police say only two tickets were issued during the campaign to drivers who failed to stop for a pedestrian at a crossover.
The crossovers are relatively new to the Niagara region, and police say more are being installed throughout the area.
Pedestrians have the right of way at crossovers. Drivers and cyclist must stop behind the yield line and wait until the pedestrians have completely crossed the roadway before proceeding.
Police say safety is everyone’s responsibility, whether you’re a driver, cyclist, or pedestrian.
Drivers and cyclists who fail to obey the rules at pedestrian crossovers may be fined up to $1,000. Drivers may also be subject to demerit points.
