Niagara Regional Police have issued over 100 warnings in the region’s new community safety zones.

The tickets were issued on Tuesday as part of the annual back to school traffic safety and awareness day.

This year’s focus was on the ten new Community Safety Zones.

None of the rules of the road change in these zones, only the penalties.

Police say the majority of drivers were driving cautiously around the school zones but officers did issue 112 warnings.

They also issued 22 tickets for speeding and ten other tickets for various traffic offences.

In additional to regular uniform patrol, another 41 officers took part in the initiative.

Police say warnings will be issued for two weeks. Officers will start laying charges on Sept. 21.
