Niagara doctor overbilled patients

Niagara Health System’s top eye doctor has stepped down, after it was learned that he overcharged patients more than a decade ago.

The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario found that Dr. Andrew Winston Taylor of Niagara Falls purposefully over-billed more than 120 patients for a laser-eye procedure that they never actually received between 2002 and 2003.

The council says the doctor covered his tracks by altering patient documents and ‘blank firing’ the laser, to make it seem that the machine was used.

Dr. Taylor was the head of Ophthalmology at the NHS, but his actions in question happened at his lasik clinic in Niagara Falls.

He faces suspension, revocation of his licence or a $35-thousand fine.
