Niagara collision rate falls

If you’ve been in a crash, you’re certainly not alone among drivers in this province. According to an Allstate Insurance safe driving study, when it comes to collisions, Ontario is the second worst place to drive in Canada.
Our province is just behind Alberta. And the days leading up the holidays are the most hazardous on the road.
According to this survey, December is the most dangerous month to drive in Ontario.
Sgt. Shane Donovan, Niagara Regional Police: “It’s mostly due to the weather, and people not driving to the weather conditions.”
High speeds, slippery roads, and the number of fender benders spike.
But drivers distracted behind the wheel is another huge problem.
The blame goes to the hustle and bustle around the Christmas shopping season the days with the highest number of collisions are December 21st, 22nd and 23rd.
Last year on December 21st, there were more than three thousand collision
claims in Ontario.
The area with the most collisions is the city of Toronto and the communities
around it. Milton has the sixth highest crash rate.
St. Catharines is in ten lowest collision-prone areas.
Collisions are more likely to occur at intersections and on roads where cars are stopping and starting, especially in the winter.
Sgt. Donovan: “If you’re sliding, going to collide with people in front of you, or someone collides in the back of you, it’s very dangerous.”
The safest days of the year to drive is December 25th and New Year’s Day.
