York police have charged a 37-year-old woman after a one-year-old baby was left alone inside a hot car in Richmond Hill.

Emergency crews responded to reports of an “unattended baby screaming” in a parked car near a pharmacy around 8 p.m. Sunday.

Police say the infant appeared to be in distress and was rescued by first responders.

The baby was transported to hospital as a precaution. Investigators say the child’s mother was arrested after being located inside the pharmacy.

Police also discovered the woman was wanted on an arrest warrant and in possession of stolen property.

She has been charged with abandoning child, theft under $5,000, and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000.

The mother’s name is not being released in order to protect the identity of the child.

The Children’s Aid Society has been notified and the infant has been turned over to family members.

The woman has been held in custody and is scheduled to appear in court later Monday.
