Hamilton is reminding residents about new rules in regard to fireworks displays ahead of Victoria Day long weekend starting May 23.

The updated bylaw stipulates that fireworks can only be discharged on private property between dusk and 11:00 p.m. on Victoria Day and Canada Day, or the day after in the case of bad weather. Fireworks can also only be purchased seven days prior to the holidays.

Fire Chief Dave Cunliffe says the changes were made as a result of an increase in complaints for fireworks and people discharging fireworks in public spaces like parks and roadways.

Cunliffe reminds residents to follow safety guidelines when holding a fireworks display by choosing a clear, open space away from buildings and combustible materials, making sure the fireworks are safely secured, making sure children are supervised and making sure fireworks are safely disposed.
