Nestle is applying for a patent to reduce the sugar content in chocolate.
The global chocolate maker says by hollowing out sugar particles, it can reduce its sugar content by as much as 40%.
They plan to start rolling out products containing the new sugar in 2018.
The Swiss company couldn’t comment on issues related to calories, costs and regulatory approvals. So far, Nestle says it is only looking at the sugar reduction for sweets like candy and chocolate. The company also says it only uses “natural ingredients” and the final product is still sugar, not an artificial sweetener.
