People on Six Nations are encouraged that some athletes from the reserve are travelling on passports issued by the Six Nations Haudenosaunee Confederacy.
Members of the Iroquois Nationals lacrosse team were kept out of an international competition in 2010 because their Six Nations passports weren’t recognized by British officials. But team members from Canada are using the passports this year to go to the World Field Lacrosse Championships now taking place in Denver.
It was good news for lacrosse players practicing on the Six Nations reserve today as the game invented by their ancestors becomes more and more popular.
Brandon Green Styers, Niagara Thunderhawks: “I think that’s awesome. I think that’s perfect for everyone because that gives everyone the opportunity to go all over and play where ever and be a part of these tournaments.”
Ian Martin, Six Nations Arrows: “It’s good to see that other people are, other countries and provinces are trying to run with the game also.”
Some Six Nations members say it’s a point of pride that they travel on Haudenosaunee passports instead of Canadian or American passports.
