Impressive examples of movie special effects are being auctioned off by Waddington’s in Toronto.
The pieces were created by FXSmith Studio, best known for bringing the mutants from X-Men to life. There’s a wide and unique range of goods for sale, including mutant bat heads, cockroach wings, and life-like busts of Geena Davis, Whoopi Goldberg and Hugh Jackman.
FXSmith’s Jessica Phillips says the exhibit represents a massive amount of history of special effects. “Especially ones that are a bit more on the morbid side, you could say.”
“You can see the beauty and the artistry that was done in this, in how lifelike they made these pieces.”
Stephen Ranger of Waddington’s explains why the sale is important. “It brings together for the first time in, what we think is Canadian history, an amazing group of material made by a group of, really, artists, who are pretty much unheralded.”
“But what’s so fun about it is that it combines a sort of a glamour of Hollywood with the collectability of fine art.”
A preview of the auction is taking place at Waddington’s on Toronto’s King St E from March 21st to 23rd. Anyone interested in these pieces can bid online from March 23rd to 26th.
