A 33-year-old woman is dead after trying to rescue her son from choppy waters in Lake Ontario.
It happened around 3:45 p.m. Sunday near Pickering, Ont.
Durham Regional Police says the woman’s six-year-old son was on an inflatable raft when the wind blew him away from shore.
They say the woman and three bystanders all swam out to try and rescue the boy.
The child was brought to shore safely by a man but the mother was unable to swim back. Bystanders brought her ashore and attempted to perform CPR until paramedics arrived on scene.
She was taken to hospital where she was later pronounced dead.
Police say the woman was a resident of Oshawa but have not released her name.
