Mosquitoes with West Nile Virus confirmed in Welland: Niagara public health reports

Niagara Region Public Health has confirmed the region’s first mosquitoes with West Nile Virus for 2025 in Welland.

Public health warns that although the mosquitoes carrying the virus were found in Welland, all Niagara residents should take precautions to protect themselves from being bitten by the bugs.

It advises residents to:

• Wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, socks and shoes when outdoors, especially at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active
• Use a mosquito repellent containing DEET or lcaridin
• Drain standing or stagnant water on your property regularly
• Ensure all windows and doors in your home have screens that are not damaged

No human cases of West Nile Virus have been identified in Niagara in 2025.

Niagara Region Public Health says West Nile Virus is a mosquito-borne virus that can cause fever, headache, body aches and in rare cases, serious neurological illnesses such as meningitis.

It says as well that individuals infected with the virus will not show symptoms, but the risk for severe illness increases with age and those with weakened immune systems.
