Millard may not be eligible for parole until he is 102

Crown lawyer Jill Cameron made it clear that Dellen Millard’s life is likely going to end in jail. He’s already serving two life-sentences for the murders of Tim Bosma and Laura Babcock, but Cameron says this third and final sentence is about justice for his father, Wayne Millard, and sending a message to anyone who commits similar crimes.

Dellen Millard was convicted of killing his father in 2012. He shot the 71-year old millionaire businessman in the head while he slept.

The Crown argued that Millard should get a third consecutive life-sentence, meaning he’d be 102-years old before he’s eligible for parole.

Wayne Millard’s girlfriend’s victim impact statement illustrated the lasting pain caused by the murder.

“Wayne’s death never goes away. Never a night goes by that it doesn’t play out again in my head. I need prescription medication to get to sleep at night. I attend physiotherapy once per week due to the stress in my body. I have nightmares and call out in my sleep.”

As The Crown described Wayne Millard as a kind, generous man, his killer, his own son, sat in the prisoner’s box and didn’t show any emotion on his face.

Despite his lack of empathy, the defence argued that keeping Millard imprisoned that long is excessive and would crush any incentive for rehabilitation. They’re requesting that Millard serve his third life-sentence at the same time as his existing sentence, thus making him eligible for parole after 50 years.

Lawyer Ravin Pillay referenced the Justin Bourque murder case. The 24-year was sentenced to 75-years in jail with no chance of parole for the shooting deaths of three Mounties and wounding two more.

Pillay argued that Bourque’s crimes were worse than Millard’s because his crimes also terrified the entire community of Moncton, New Brunswick.

The Superior Court Justice Maureen Forestell says she’ll make her decision known on Tuesday December 18th.
