A group led by Michael Andlauer has reached a deal in principle to buy 90 per cent of the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday.

According to reports, the deal is close to US$1 billion, which is the highest price ever paid for a hockey team.

Andlauer is the lone owner of the Ontario Hockey League’s Bulldogs and a minority owner of the Montreal Canadiens.

“My family and I are very excited to be a part of the Ottawa Senators Hockey Club,” said Andlauer. “I believe that the Senators’ fanbase is one of the most passionate in the league and I’m excited to take the franchise’s success both on and off the ice to the next level.

Following the passing of owner Eugene Melnyk earlier in 2022, the board of directors of Senators Sports & Entertainment initiated the team’s sale process in November 2022.

Melnyk left the franchise to his daughters, Anna and Olivia.
