McGuinty thinks NDP will support budget

Dalton McGuinty’s first budget as leader of a minority government goes to a vote next week.

The Liberals need the NDP’s support to avoid another election. The NDP has put together a package of proposals, which McGuinty says the province cannot afford.

“They want us to save the horse racing industry, which is costing us millions of dollars. They want us to put a tax credit on home heating fuel, which, by the way, benefits Ontario’s wealthiest the most. They’ve got the biggest homes. They use the most fuel. So you begin to add up this package, and it’s a very expensive package.”

“We’re all going to have to give a little, and my sense is the NDP are beginning to understand that.”

McGuinty says he is optimistic his government will be able to reach an agreement with the NDP, but remained vague on just how they plan to do that.
