McGuinty sets byelection date

Premier Dalton McGuinty has called by-elections for September 6th in Vaughan and Kitchener-Waterloo, to fill the two seats left by Liberal Greg Sorbara and Progressive Conservative Elizabeth Witmer.

McGuinty made the announcement at a school in Maple this morning, saying labour peace in schools is a key issue in the by-elections.

“We remain very optimistic, we realize it’s not very easy for governments to win byelections, but we’ll work as hard as we can and we’ll get top quality candidates coming forward. I’m confident we’ll get a good candidate, but we’re proud of the good record that we’ve amassed over the last 9 years in this community.”

The premier says the announcement doesn’t mean he won’t be calling the legislature back in an emergency session to impose a new contract on Ontario teachers, later this month.
