McGuinty gov’t facing potential contempt charge

The speaker of the Ontario legislature has ruled the Liberal government violated members’ privileges by refusing to produce all documents on two cancelled electricity generating stations.

Those generating plants were to be located in Oakville and Mississauga. Plans for the Oakville facility were cancelled before the 2010 municipal election; the Mississauga one, days before the 2011 provincial election.

The speaker decided the issue would go back to the three party leaders for it to be resolved in hopes of avoiding a vote in the legislature that could find energy minister Chris Bentley in contempt of parliament. A result is to be presented on September 24th.

The plants have already cost taxpayers $190 million.
