Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit is looking into an incident in Hamilton’s east end where a 19-year-old man was tasered while in police custody.
In a news release, the SIU say Hamilton Police were responding to a call on Glennie Avenue for a 19-year-old man with a knife causing damage inside a home.
There was an “interaction” between the man and police. Two officers tasered the man and he was arrested and taken to hospital with a broken jaw.
Neighbour’s tell CHCH news that they heard shouting and screaming coming from 188 Glennie around 11pm Saturday night. One woman says she saw about 6 police cruisers and 2 ambulances pull up to the house a short time later. Neighbours say a couple in their 50’s live in the home, and that they have a son in his late teens or early 20s.
Sandra Lindsay lives down the street from where the incident took place. “My daughter heard some yelling and screaming and some people running around things like that. My husband went out and checked and saw the police cars… it kind of upset my daughter a little bit having something like that going on in the street,” Lindsay said.
The SIU did not respond to our requests for an interview Saturday, but in a news release say four investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.
The SIU investigates reports involving police where there has been death or serious injury.
