Man surrenders to Niagara police following standoff

Niagara police say a 42-year-old man was taken to hospital Wednesday afternoon following a standoff with police.

Officers responded to call about a “man in crisis” at a home on Basswood Cres. in Niagara Falls.

Police say they received “credible information” that multiple firearms may inside the home.

Officers contained the area and evacuated some nearby homes.

After nearly three hours of speaking with crisis negotiators, the man peacefully surrendered to police.

He was apprehended under the Mental Health Act of Ontario and was transported to a local hospital.

Police seized multiple firearms and ammunition from the home due to an “ongoing concern for safety.”
