Man in hospital, 2 cats rescued from Hamilton basement fire

A man has been taken to hospital following a basement fire in east Hamilton.

Crews responded to reports of a bed on fire at a home on Rennie St. shortly before 1 p.m. on Thursday.

When firefighters arrived, they found heavy smoke coming from the building and fire in the basement.

The blaze was quickly put out.

Officials say two people were inside the home at the time of the fire but managed to get out before emergency responders arrived on scene.

A man was taken to hospital and treated for smoke inhalation. The other person did not require any treatment.

Two cats were rescued from the home and are now in the care of animal services.
