Man charged with 1st-degree murder in shooting death of innocent bystander Harsimrat Randhawa

A 32-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of innocent bystander Harsimrat Randhawa in April.
Hamilton police, with the help of officers in Niagara, arrested Jerdaine Foster in Niagara Falls on Tuesday. In addition to the first-degree murder charge, he is facing three counts of attempted murder.
“Acts committed by those who choose to pick up a gun for their purposes without any regard for the consequences they keep,” Hamilton Police Chief Frank Bergen says during a press conference Thursday, “Selfish, dangerous and the byproduct of criminal entitlement.”
Foster made his first court appearance Wednesday.

Det. Sgt. Daryl Reid says Foster was known to Hamilton police and had ties to the Hamilton, Halton and Niagara regions as he often moved around in short-term rental properties.
Investigators believe at least seven people were involved in the dispute leading up to the death of 21-year-old Randhawa on the evening of April 17.
“The investigation is still ongoing and we will do everything in our power to identify, locate and arrest all of these people that are involved in this death,” Reid says.

Dispute leads to death of ‘innocent bystander’
Randhawa, an international student at Mohawk College, had been standing near a bus stop in the area of Upper James Street and South Bend Road.
Just minutes earlier, investigators say a dispute broke out between the group of suspects nearby, resulting in the passenger of a black Mercedes SUV firing gunshots at the occupants of a white Hyundai Elantra. Reid says Foster was in the Mercedes and at least two other vehicles were involved.
One of the gunshots hit Randhawa in the chest. She was then rushed to hospital, where she later died of her injuries.
“Harsimrat was an innocent bystander. She was simply trying to make her way home from a local gym when she was struck and killed by a stray bullet,” Reid says.
Reid would not comment on the motive of the dispute and shooting, saying it “is a major part of the court process so I need to be careful with what I release publicly now.”
