A man with ties to the Hamilton area has been arrested following an assault at the Salvation Army men’s shelter downtown, Hamilton police say.

Police were called to the shelter on York Blvd. around 11 p.m. Thursday for reports of a man with a weapon.

When they arrived on scene, officers found a man with serious injuries on his face. The 49-year-old was taken to hospital.

Police say a short time later, a man was located in the building and was arrested without incident. The 34-year-old faces charges of aggravated assault and failure to comply with probation.

Police say a large knife they believe was used in the attack was located at the scene. They say the two men are clients of the shelter and this was a targeted incident.
