With the Tiger-Cats on a bye week, the McMaster Marauders have assumed ownership of their digs at Ron Joyce Stadium.
Football is back at Mac. The Marauders, who advanced to the OUA semi-finals last year, where they lost to eventual Yates Cup champion Western, began training camp today.
The battle for positions began under a clear blue sky at Ron Joyce Stadium — and the competition at quarterback promises to be a close one. Head coach Stefan Ptaszek says “I don’t think my guys even notice which one’s in there. They’re all about the same height. Maturity, leadership… all so calm… no bad throws there.”
Fifth-year pivot Marshall Ferguson has a distinct advantage, but former Canadian junior champ Asher Hastings — a newcomer from Regina — will challenge for that top spot, and Ferguson is looking forward to it. “That kind of relationship, of just wanting to show the team that we’re together in this, no matter who’s playing… if we’re winning, who cares?”
The Marauders have lost veteran offensive lineman Matt Sewell, receiver Mike Dicroce, defensive back Mike Daly and linebacker Aram Eisho, while injured running back Chris Pezetta is confident he’ll be able to return to the playing field after a two-year absence.
All-Canadian cornerback Joey Cupido has also returned for his final year of eligibility. “It’s gonna be a very competitive camp, probably the most since i’ve been here. A lot of young guys trying to make a name; (i’m) looking forward to competing with them.”
Coach Ptaszek has the last word. “This group has loads of potential, and if they combine it with hard work they’ve got a chance.”
