Long Way North is a French-Danish animated film directed by Rémi Chayé. The hand-drawn 2D animation premiered at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival last year, winning the Audience Award. The voice cast stars Chloé Dunn, Vivienne Vermes, Peter Hudson, Antony Hickling, and Tom Perkins.

This beautifully animated adventure tells the story of 15-year-old Russian aristocrat Sasha, who, when her explorer grandfather mysteriously goes missing on his latest expedition, embarks on an epic adventure to find him and his lost ship, the Davai.

Chayé was surprised by the reception of the film after its release. “Since the release of the film in France, we’ve received compliments in many different ways. Some people are telling us ‘your film is so great, it doesn’t seem like animation’, some others are saying ‘thank you for reviving traditional 2D animation, we’re tired of 3D’. Same goes for the screenplay and the story: ‘It’s so brilliant not to underline all aspects of the plots, to trust the intelligence of the audience, especially for kids… It’s like a real film…’. We made some choices which offered us a mix of different techniques. In each of them we took what we needed and we made sure the end result was coherent and strong. I would love to think Long Way North has its own original touch.”

Long Way North is rated PG.
