Local reaction to Turkey’s airport explosion

Ataturk Airport is the third busiest airport in Europe, and despite being attacked by suicide bombers less than 24-hours ago, the airport, which welcomes over 165 000 passengers daily, opened it’s doors to travelers.

But it was anything but a normal Wednesday morning; staff were still cleaning up destroyed and heavily damaged parts of the international departure terminal where three suspected Islamic terrorists detonated themselves killing 41 people – 13 foreigners – and injuring 239.

“I just recognize the gunshots and hearing this huge explosion, and I knew immediately that it was a bomb. And I just bolted as fast as I can and went into the first room I can find which ended up being a men’s prayer room.”

It wasn’t a normal day at Pearson Airport either. In an attempt to prevent a similar attack, security focused all it’s attention on passengers departing to Istanbul with security dogs sniffing all luggage heading to Ataturk.

But as the large crowds demonstrate, yesterday’s attack hasn’t shaken up travel plans or safety concerns.
