Liberals survive third Conservative non-confidence motion
For the third straight time, the Trudeau Liberals survived a Conservative attempt to topple their government.
Despite the Tories’ attempt to use Singh’s government criticisms, the NDP leader had previously said he would not support Poilievre’s motion to bring down the Liberals prior to today’s question period.
Meanwhile, the New Democrats did not receive the same support from the Liberals after a failed NDP motion called for everyone—including seniors—to receive the $250 holiday rebate and to cut GST on all home essentials.
The Parliamentary Budget Officer crunched the numbers on the Liberals’ GST tax cut, saying it will cost the government $1.6 billion but could climb to $2.7 billion if provinces that issue HST ask for compensation for their portion of the blended tax.
Ontario, which stands to lose the most HST revenue, says it will not seek compensation from Ottawa and will match the sales tax cut.
