Leafs fall to Red Wings in OT

Mike Babcock went from Thursday’s high of being introduced as head coach of Team Canada for the 2016 World Cup, to back to his day job as the coach of one of the NHL’s worst teams. In fact, going into Friday night’s game, they were dead last with 2-8-2 record.

It was a night of remembrance as the Leafs, who will be on the road for 3 games starting Saturday, held a Remembrance Day ceremony to honour our veterans and those who have given their lives for our country. It was also a night of celebration regarding the Hockey Hall of Fame game, and this year’s hall of fame class was introduced with Nicklas Lidstrom, Chris Pronger, Phil Housley and Sergei Fedorov leading the way. They will be inducted on Monday.

James Reimer was in goal for the Leafs and he’s played well at times, but has a penchant for allowing soft goals, just like that one late in the first period. Reimer can’t handle a shot from Henrik Zetterberg and the puck bounces past him for Zetterberg’s 300th career goal. That would be the only goal until late in the third when Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf ties the game with 1:02 to go in regulation, beating Petr Mrazek for his first of the season.

But in overtime, with lots of room on the ice, and Jakub Kindl goes for a skate. He can’t believe how much room there is, and he picks the corner on Reimer.

2-1 Red Wings is the final. The Leafs played well, but they lose it. They’re in Washington Saturday.
