Distraction thefts in Hamilton targeting older adults have police warning the public to stay alert.

Two of the latest thefts targeted an 89-year-old woman on Mohawk Road and a 79-year-old woman near Edgevale Place.

Police say on Oct. 6, at about 4:30 p.m., a white Jeep with no front licence plate pulled into a driveway and stopped to speak with the 89-year-old victim who was walking along the sidewalk.

During the conversation, a suspect placed a hat over her head and stole her gold necklace and diamond bracelet before fleeing the area.

On Oct. 13, a 79-year-old woman was approached by passengers of a dark-coloured SUV while out for her daily walk.

A female passenger engaged the victim in conversation, claiming her mother had recently passed away and asked her to try on a ring.

After the woman removed her own rings, the suspect switched them and returned a different set.

The victim later discovered her gold rings had been stolen.

This year, these incidents have increased by 87 per cent, rising from 39 in 2024 to 74 reported cases.

Investigators note that suspects typically target adults aged 60 to 90 and often work in pairs or groups — one suspect distracts the victim while others commit the theft.
