Lailey Winery damaged in fire

Fire ripped through a winery in Niagara-on-the-Lake Monday afternoon.
Viewers sent in photos of the blaze at Lailey Vineyard. The photos show that the flames were quite high and there was lots of smoke, which could be seen from quite a distance away.
It was a massive fire. Flames and thick black smoke could be seen coming from the Lailey Vineyard. Fire crews were called to the winery on the Niagara River Parkway around noon.
The fire started in a garage and spread to a production facility. Fire officials say it was accidental and started when someone in the garage was using a light to find something.
Firefighters were able to get it under control fairly quickly but some wine barrels were damaged. This is one of the busiest times of year with harvest underway but luckily the press and fermentation tanks were not damaged.
A viewer sent us a picture of two women helping a man who was laying face down in the vineyard. But fire officials say no one was seriously hurt.
Fire officials say the garage was being used mostly for storage, but it’s still too soon to say what exactly was in the room and what the total damage estimate is. Luckily, the cold storage room attached to the garage only had a few bottles of wine in it, and they were damaged by water, not by the fire.
