Federal Industry Minister Mélanie Joly is calling on the owner of Stelco to provide a concrete plan to restore jobs before a meeting takes place.
In 2024, the owner of Stelco made the purchase. Despite them saying they kept all promises made, nearly 500 layoff notices were announced for Stelco workers in Hamilton and Nanticoke.
The company is now requesting a meeting with the federal government to work out a plan but the government wants the commitment of the plan first.
“The facts are clear. We made serious commitments to Canada when we acquired Stelco and we have honoured them,” Cleveland-Cliffs CEO Lourenco Goncalves said in a statement.
Cleveland-Cliffs said it’s in full compliance with the agreement made to purchase Stelco. There was an Investment Canada Act review as a part of that deal.
The company now wants a meeting to happen between Joly and Goncalves.
The purpose of this meeting is to give all the laid off workers at Stelco their jobs back and create a plan moving forward.
