A planned joint U.S.-Canada ceremony to celebrate the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge has been cancelled after President Donald Trump announced new tariffs on Canadian goods.

A spokesperson says it would be “inappropriate to proceed with a celebratory event” after Trump’s latest move.

The Windsor to Detroit bridge is expected to open to traffic on July 27.

Monday’s tariff announcement renewed tensions between the two countries just weeks after they reached an agreement to open the bridge following a number of delays.

Canada financed the nearly $4.4 billion structure, which had been under construction since 2018.

A Canadian celebration of the bridge’s opening is still planned for Friday.
