John Tory works on transition plan following letter of resignation
Despite protests from political leaders, Mayor John Tory submitted his formal resignation letter and is now working on a transition plan.
The letter of resignation was handed to the city clerk late last night, shortly after Tory’s budget was approved by city council.
Tory’s resignation will come into effect Friday at 5 p.m., which will trigger a byelection.

The decision comes after he called a news conference saying he would resign due to an affair with a former staffer.
In his letter, Tory thanked the people of Toronto for trusting him as a mayor since 2014. Tory says he continues to be deeply sorry and apologizes to city residents and all those hurt by his actions.
