A Niagara Detention Centre guard allegedly sparked the attack on inmate Kelvin Sawa, an attack that ended with Sawa hanging himself and Jeremy Hall being charged with his murder. That revelation came today from a man who was an inmate the day the hanging happened.

Christopher Boland, a key witness for the prosecution was an inmate inside 2 wing at the Niagara Detention Centre on August 15, 2011, the day Kelvin Sawa was found hanging in his cell. Boland testified a guard motioned for him to come over and then told him Sawa was up on sexual assault charges involving a child. Boland testified once he had the information about Sawa he wanted to tell someone to get brownie points. He went to Jeremy cause as he put it, he was the top dog on the range, he ran the show and what he says goes.

Boland said Jeremy Hall followed Sawa into the shower, he could see Hall punching and kneeing Sawa. “When Sawa came out of the shower his face looked like popcorn” and after, “Jeremy was bragging he was landing amazing shots and must have broken a couple of ribs.”

Boland testified another inmate, Cale Rose threw a rope into Sawa’s cell and told him to put it around his neck. Boland says he watched Sawa’s face turn a dark purple. Boland said, “I was shocked, I’d never seen it before, I couldn’t believe it actually happened in front of me.”

Boland said he didn’t run to the glass for help, he didn’t know what to do, he didn’t do anything.
