Today, it was back to school day for the Bulldogs. As if the first day of school wasn’t tough enough, try starting at a new school, in a new city…in some instances far away from your family. And when class is done, your hockey career takes-over. That’s the challenge facing the Hamilton Bulldogs today.
New locker, new school, new city. For 17 year old Jack Hanley, it’s the third time he’s starting over in the last four years. “I have physics, functions and english….yeah it’s tough to jam it all in but you gotta find time to do it.”
Hanley’s in grade 12 and hopes to graduate in the spring. 2014 marked his rookie season in the OHL, where he saw action in 45 games. That’s quite a bit of travelling, so when does he find time for homework? “Well, we do a little on the bus…or when we’re at hotels…stuff like that.”}
Adam Laishram is from Ashburn, Ontario, not far from Hanley’s hometown of Whitby. He’s finishing up a few high school credits, and hopes to enroll at McMaster next semester. Now in his third OHL season, Laishram scored 11 goals and 19 assists last year, and was voted the fan favorite in Belleville. As the son of a doctor, he says he’s been raised to find a balance between athletics and academics. “It’s easy with the guys there, we have a lot of classes together so we can help each other out. The schools have been great as well, and Ancaster seems like a great fit.”
The Bulldogs spent their last weekend of the summer on the ice, winning their first preseason game against Peterborough on Saturday 5 to 4, and then travelling to Erie on Sunday where they were beaten 4-0.
