iPhone 5S hits stores

(Update)
On a day of doom for BlackBerry, it’s the opposite story for it’s rival Apple. Two new iPhones went on sale Friday and around the world people camped out overnight to be among the first with the new 5c or 5s. The 5s is a more expensive model with upgrades like a fingerprint scanner, slow-motion camera, and a faster processor. And as Lisa Hepfner reports, while it looks like the smart phone market leader, Apple is no longer the world’s best selling smart phone.
Some waited in line all night for the business opportunity.
“I know a guy sold 2 gold cards for like 700 bucks. That’s pretty awesome. Waiting a couple extra hours and he got 700 bucks in his pocket.”
But most just wanted the latest iPhone.
“It’s reliability, consistancy with apple. You know every year you get a good phone, latest operating system for a couple years after the phone comes out. The quality is there.”
“It’s been a rough week. My wife left me last week. So I’m soothing myself with an iPhone. I know this iPhone is never going to give me up, never going to let me down. Never going to run around and desert me.”
But phone experts say the iPhone isn’t necessarily the best phone.
Munish Sharma works at the Telephone Booth “I’ve used the iPhone in the past but it’s very simple. I need my phone with other features. There’s more things you can do in terms of multitasking, music downloading, setting upgames, a lot more free applications in android.”
Jeff Boudreau is with Wind Mobile: “I am an android man to the core. I feel like I have a lot more control over what I can do with my phone, what I can put on my phone as opposed to an iPhone.”
Worldwide, android far outsells Apple, but Friday was Apple’s first foray into China. Nick Bontis from McMaster’s DeGroote School of Business says Apple gets about half its revenue from product, and the company needs to sell about seven million phones with this new launch. The company uses hype to reach its marketing goals: “There is an Apple store. There is no Samsung or BlackBerry or Nokia store. So they can fabricate the demand by limiting the supply that’s available the first day. That’s causing the lines. That’s creating buzz. That’s driving revenue. It’s all marketing and p.r.”
You can buy the new phones online and they’ll ship within 10 days, unless you’re looking for a gold version, which may take a month to arrive.
