Infinitely Polar Bear is a comedic drama written and directed by Maya Forbes, who makes her feature film directorial debut. The held its premiere at last year’s Sundance Film Festival and was screened in the Gala Presentations programme at TIFF. The cast features Mark Ruffalo, Zoe Saldana, Imogene Wolodarsky, Ashley Aufderheide, and Keir Dullea.

Set in the late 70s, a manic-depressive mess of a father tries to win back his wife by taking responsibility of their two young daughters. The spirited girls don’t make the overwhelming task any easier

Forbes’ screenplay is based on her childhood, which allowed her to shape the film to fit her exact vision. “When I finished the script for INFINITELY POLAR BEAR, I knew what I wanted to see: a film that was funny, sad, authentic and warm. Warmth was very important to me. I wanted to see a humane film about the effects of mental illness on a family. I wanted to see real, resilient children. I wanted to see a movie about love and the hard choices people have to make every day. And once I had seen it so clearly in my mind, once I knew how it was supposed to look and sound and feel, I knew that I had to direct it. This decision meant getting it made would take years and that the movie might never be made at all. But if I gave it to someone else to direct, I would forever be haunted by what might have been.”

Infinitely Polar Bear is rated PG.
