Indigenous health-care centre to move to former school in Hamilton’s east end

The De dwa da dehs nye>s Aboriginal Health Centre is set to open a redeveloped centre in a former school in Hamilton’s east end.

The Biindigen Well-being Centre will be housed in the former St. Helen’s Catholic Elementary School on Britannia Avenue. Its in the McQuesten neighbourhood, which has a higher than average Indigenous population. Biindigen is an Ojibway word that means “come in” or “welcome.”

The centre is moving from its current location west of Sherman Avenue South. The new centre has been in the works since 2014.

On April 27, DAHC announced that it had received $10 million in funding from the Ontario Ministry of Health.

There has been no start date for construction announced yet. On Friday, the centre held a celebration of the new location.
