Indigenous community holds ceremony for Red Dress Day in Hamilton

Members of the Indigenous community gathered early Friday morning for a sunrise ceremony to mark this year’s Red Dress Day in Hamilton.
Today marks the National Day of Awareness of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit people.
The 2019 national inquiry into the issue says the crisis constitutes a genocide of Indigenous people.
The inquiry also says Indigenous women are 12 times more likely to be murdered or go missing than other women in Canada and 16 times more likely than white women.
The sunrise ceremony began at 5 a.m. followed by a walk from Bayfront Park to the Hamilton Regional Indian Centre. A sacred fire will be held there starting at 10 a.m.
