The unwelcome ice storm that we woke up to this morning left thousands without power and wreaked havoc on the roads. One man is dead after a crash with a transport truck in Flamborough and the OPP responded to hundreds of crashes today.
Just after 6 this morning a transport truck crashed head on with a car on Highway 52 at Governors road. The 25 year old man from Hamilton driving the car was pronounced dead. Police say icy roads played a role in the collision. The driver of the transport truck was taken to a Kitchener hospital and is expected to be ok. OPP say this crash is one of hundreds in the GTHA and say police responded to over 900 emergency calls today because of the weather.
Tree branches everywhere were covered in ice, a lot of them snapping right off or hanging down to the ground but the worst of it has been on some of the power lines. Students were sent home after a downed power line landed on Westmount high schools property. 4 other nearby schools were closed because of the power outage.
This early spring storm left almost 40 000 Hydro customers without power.
