I Smile Back is a drama directed by Adam Salky, based on Amy Koppelman’s 2008 novel of the same name. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival this year and screened at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. The film stars Sarah Silverman, Josh Charles, Thomas Sadoski, Mia Barron, and Skylar Gaertner.

Laney (Sarah Silverman) is an attractive, intelligent suburban wife and devoted mother of two adorable children. She has the perfect husband (Josh Charles), a pristine house and a shiny SUV for carting the children to their next activity. However, just beneath the façade lie depression and disillusionment that send her careening into a secret world of reckless compulsion. Only very real danger will force her to face the painful root of her destructiveness and its crumbling effect on those she loves. Now, with the destruction of her family looming and temptation everywhere, Laney makes one last desperate attempt at redemption.

“I wasn’t looking for a dramatic role,” says Silverman. “I wasn’t out to prove anything. I love comedy. It’s my joy. Actually, I am never looking for anything. I always stumble upon things or I just make something myself. So this was real dumb luck. I wasn’t looking for it, but I’m really, really glad I did it.”

I Smile Back is rated 18A.
