Highway 401 between Guelph Line and Highway 6 South were closed Monday morning for what police called a possible road rage shooting investigation.

Ontario Provincial Police say the incident involved a dark sedan and a red Hyundai Kona in the westbound lanes of Highway 401 near the Campbellville-Milton area between 1:30 a.m. and 1:40 a.m.

“We got a call from a victim that was travelling westbound 401, just past Guelph Line, involved in some kind of a road rage altercation with another unknown vehicle, a dark sedan,” said OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt.

Officers say the drivers of the two vehicles saw each other and exchanged some high-beam headlight flashes.

Moments later, investigators say the Hyundai moved into the middle lane and was then met with gunfire.

OPP says there were two people inside the Hyundai, but luckily no one was hurt.

“The other vehicle had fled the area or was no longer in sight and was no longer an active threat,” said Schmidt. “So we don’t know exactly where it was. Apparently, there was some items tossed from the vehicles and then there were shots fired.”

Police say it is unclear if the incident involves more than one suspect, and are examining the shell casing inside the Hyundai.

Investigators also say it is unclear if the suspect vehicle exited off Highway 6, or if it continued heading westbound.

Police also didn’t say if they’ve recovered a weapon.

Roads are now open after earlier closures for an investigation.

Cambridge OPP are asking witnesses or drivers with dash cam video to call 519-654-0150.
