HSR fare hikes go into effect today

Starting today, HSR fares are going up. This is the third fare increase over the last year as part of a ten-year transit plan that was approved by Hamilton city council in the spring of 2015.

The new fare schedule is as follows:

Cash
(Adult, Student, Senior) – $3
Adult
Paper Ticket or PRESTO – $2.30
Paper or PRESTO Monthly Pass – $101.20
Student
(Elementary/Secondary)
Person between the ages of 5 and 19 who attends an Elementary or Secondary school in the City of Hamilton. All Secondary students must present their HSR photo ID when using a Student fare.
Paper Ticket or PRESTO – $1.90
Paper or PRESTO Monthly Pass – $83.60
Senior
(persons age 65+, PRESTO only)
PRESTO Single Ride – $1.90
PRESTO Monthly Pass – $26.50
PRESTO Senior Annual Pass – $265.00
Day Pass
Unlimited travel on all regularly scheduled routes for a maximum of 6 people with a maximum of 2 adults for that day – $13.80
Trans-Cab Program
A 50 cent Trans-Cab premium is charged in addition to the HSR fare.

The increased fares are part of Phase 1 of the 10-year Local Transit Strategy. Today marks the end of Phase 1, which was rolled out over three periods; September 2015, March 2016 and September 2016.
Officials say the hikes will help pay for much-needed improvements of the HSR.
Current tickets will be accepted in the fare box until September 30th as long as they are accompanied by the difference in cash.
