How are ultra-processed foods impacting your health?

Ultra-processed foods — from frozen meals and sodas to packaged cookies and fast food — are everywhere, and experts say they may be harming your health.

Studies published in the medical journal The Lancet link them to chronic conditions like obesity, diabetes, heart disease and depression.

These foods are designed to be convenient, tasty and long-lasting, which keeps consumers buying and companies profiting.

Between 1962 and 2021, over half of the $2.9 trillion paid to food company shareholders came from ultra-processed products.

Michael Widener, a geography and planning professor from the University of Toronto who specializes in food environments and food insecurity, joined Mason Goodfellow to speak about the issue.
