Officials say a fire and explosion in a home near Flamborough Wednesday afternoon has caused around $1 million in damages.

It happened shortly before 12:30 p.m. in a home located at 2136 Safari Road.

Hamilton firefighters say they arrived to a fully-involved basement fire that spread to the first and second floors of the house.

First responders say the residents were able to evacuate without being injured.

A spokesperson for the Hamilton Fire Department says the unhoused residents are now staying with family in the area.

The fire significantly damaged the home before crews were able to extinguish the blaze.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown.

Ontario’s Office of the Fire Marshal has confirmed to CHCH News that an explosion did occur but provided limited details as the incident is still under investigation.
