Films with strong female leads highlight this week’s home video releases.

Big Eyes

Thanks to the Golden Globes’ splitting of its categories into “drama” and “comedy/musical”, and Big Eyes getting classified as the latter, Amy Adams easily walked away with the Best Actress award. That’s not to say it wasn’t deserved. But where 4/5 of the drama nominees went on to get Oscar nominations, Adams was up against Quvenzhané Wallis in Annie, among others; the competition just didn’t stand up. Really, Tim Burton’s film could have probably been classified as a drama. Who knows why it wasn’t. Those crazy Golden Globes! Extras include a making-of and two Q&A sessions.

The Babadook

Horror fans who found it hard to find a theatre screening this Australian horror film now have their chance to watch it at home. Also available on Netflix, Jennifer Kent’s award winning psychological horror is a nice change of pace from the jump scares, gore, and found footage tropes that have invaded the genre in recent years. The blu-ray has some neat extras including a tour of the house, an interview with the designer of the film’s pop-up book, cast and crew interviews, and deleted scenes.

The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death

Goodbye Daniel Radcliffe, hello Phoebe Fox. For the sequel to the 2012 Harry Potter starring film, time jumps forward to World War 2 where the titular woman’s abode is now being used as a makeshift boarding school. WHile the first film was a bit of a quiet success, this instalment received poor reviews and only made around $25-million at the box office. Chances are we won’t be seeing another Woman in Black any time soon. The small sampling of special features includes a couple of featurettes and a deleted scene.
