Holiday heartbreak

31 year old Marcel Chartrand was killed last week, Hamilton’s 12th homicide of the year. His sister Tabitha says her brother, who was a father of 4, was a loving man with a heart of gold and her family is torn apart by the loss of Marcel.

She tries to remember the good times, but the night of her brother’s murder is haunting. Robert Vandyk, a 33 year old man was staying at Marcel’s home on King street east. Investigators say a fight broke out, it moved outside and Marcel was stabbed, the porch was covered in blood. His kids were upstairs asleep, his wife witnessed her husband’s death.

“She just watched Mark fall and I guess Mark had gotten back up and gotten back to Ashley but passed away in her arms.”

This weekend Marcel and Ashley had planned to cook the Thanksgiving dinner, the entire family was supposed to go over to their place on Saturday. Instead, funeral arrangements are being made. Detectives haven’t said what they believe was the motive behind the stabbing and Tabitha does not know what the fight was about. Robert Vandyk was arrested at the house last week and charged with second degree murder.
