The 57th annual Red Mass was held at Hamilton’s Cathedral Basilica of Christ the King today.

The mass celebrates judges, attorneys, law school professors, students, and government officials. Worshipers gather every year, to ask the holy spirit to guide those with the power to seek justice.

After the service, everyone was invited to eat breakfast and hear from guest speaker Paul Henderson. He’s best known for leading Team Canada to victory at the 1972 hockey series against the Soviet Union.

“I decided maybe because I’d scored that goal in Russia, maybe I could use that around the world. And so I was dreaming, no idea how I was going to do it because I was only Christian at that time. But I stand here today and tell you, sometimes you gotta dream.”

The Red Mass tradition originated in Europe nearly 800 years ago.
