Indwell, a Hamilton housing provider, announced on Friday it purchased Kenmore Theatre with plans to build a mixed-use building with 50 deeply affordable supportive apartments and commercial space.
The beloved theatre located at 434 King St. West in Hamilton gave joy to the community both as a movie theatre and later as a CHCH studio.
Many plans to revive the theatre were made over decades but none have been successful.
Indwell is currently transforming the former Queen’s Hotel and CD Bar site on Ottawa Street and Century Manor on West 5th Street into housing.
The company plans to transform the long-vacant theatre into a site for deeply affordable homes.
“Located directly on King Street, this site will have great access to transit and local amenities, Victoria park is just down the road and we will also include upper-floor terrace spaces for outdoor programs,” said Jess Brand, Indwell’s Hamilton regional director.
“There is significant need in Hamilton for all types of housing and we continue to see the health and homelessness crisis place pressure on our entire community. This housing project is a hopeful opportunity for people seeking health, wellness, and belonging.”
