Hamilton minor hockey coach charged after fight with player

Hamilton police have charged a minor league hockey coach after he allegedly assaulted a 15 year old player during a midget game. The victim’s father, a coach from the opposing team says as a parent, the fight was disgusting to watch.

Shortly before 10 last night officers were called to Rosedale arena where a fight was taking place on the ice between players on the midget Canadiens and Senators teams. The Senators coach, identified by the victims father, jumped in and started throwing punches at a 15 year old who had been involved in an exchange with his son. Dan Barrett, whose 15 year old boy is being treated for a sore shoulder, says the situation is “done with as far as I’m concerned, he was arrested and banned from the rink it’s over with.”

The Rosedale minor hockey association says the man will no longer be a coach with the organization and has been banned from the arena.The president of the association says they were in shock when they learned the news. “Unfortunately we don’t always make good decisions. This person chose to make a bad one and will have severe consequences. But one person doesn’t own hockey, many people will enjoy hockey for years to come.”

The 48 year old has been formally charged with assault and has been released on a promise to appear in court at a future date.
