Hamilton police say a surgeon working for Hamilton Health Sciences is facing a series of sexual assault charges.

Dr. Paul Missiuna is facing offences of sexual assault, sexual interference with a person under 16, invitation to sexual touching to a young person under 16 and sexual exploitation of a young person.

The incidents are alleged to have occurred between April 1994 and December 2005.

“Hamilton Health Sciences is aware of the charges. Pending a review by HHS, Dr. Missiuna has been instructed not to attend work at the hospital,” said Wendy Stewart, a spokeswoman for HHS.

“For privacy reasons, we cannot comment further on the allegations other than to say that these charges are unrelated to his work at HHS.”

Hamilton police confirmed to CHCH News that Missiuna was arrested and charged following an investigation.

“The offence was not in the execution of his duties as a physician,” officers said in an email.

Officers said one alleged victim was involved.

Missiuna was charged on Aug. 31 and released on an undertaking, according to his profile on the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.

His bail conditions include not being alone with a person under 16, among others.

Missiuna is an orthopedic surgeon who has privileges at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton and McMaster Children’s Hospital.

He has not worked at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton for several years.
