Hamilton Police sergeant apologizes for Williams tweet

A Hamilton Police sergeant is apologizing for a tweet about Robin Williams’ death that many online found insensitive.
Sergeant Jay Turner posted a message that read: “Dear Robin Williams: I truly wish you could have chosen to set a better example for those suffering with mental health challenges.”
That tweet has since been deleted, but Turner has posted a new message of apology. “I have deleted the tweet that offended many. My intent was not to offend, but to raise awareness. a very poor choice of words. I am sorry.”
Since Turner’s tweet, Hamilton Police have also been posting about mental health. They wrote this morning, “Suicide is an emotional issue, one that our service has been deeply affected by personally and professionally.”
Veteran investigator Ian Matthews took his life at Hamilton Police headquarters last December.
Another tweet says: “We believe the more we talk about mental illness, have courageous conversation, more people will reach out & get better. Better is better.”
